Linen Upholstery Fabric: What Wholesale Buyers Should Specify

For linen upholstery the question that matters most is not the fibre — it is the weight, the weave and the abrasion performance. A sofa cover takes repeated friction on the same few centimetres, so a fabric that is perfect for a dress can fail within a year on a chair. When you brief a mill for upholstery, specify weight, width, weave, any backing or finish, and the testing you need — and ask for the test data before you commit to metres.

The five things to specify

Ask for the data, not the adjective

“Contract grade” and “heavy duty” are marketing words. What you want are the actual figures — abrasion (rub count), colourfastness and dimensional stability — measured on the specific construction you are buying. A mill that quotes a number without naming the construction is quoting a general claim, not your fabric.

Care and cleaning

Upholstery linen is normally cleaned by a method the furniture maker specifies. Agree the cleaning method early, because it affects the finish: some finishes perform better under wet cleaning and others under dry cleaning.

How we supply upholstery linen

Linen upholstery is one of our four collections. Tell us the end use — domestic sofa, hospitality seating, or a contract programme — along with the weight, width and colour you need, and we will advise on the closest construction and the testing available for it. Testing data for a specific style is available on request. See the rest of our linen upholstery collection.
